Cozy Up and Strike a Pose: What to Wear for Your Fall & Winter Photoshoots in Charlotte, NC

As the leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, it's the perfect time to capture those cozy family moments with a fall or winter photoshoot. But let's be honest, choosing outfits that both look great and keep everyone warm can feel a bit overwhelming. And as moms, we usually end up being the ones responsible for everyone's look – talk about pressure! But don't worry, I've got you covered!

Through my experience as both a mom and a family photographer in Charlotte, I've learned a thing or two about what works (and what doesn't!) when it comes to photoshoot outfits.

Embrace the Colors of the Season

Fall and winter offer a beautiful palette of rich, warm colors. I love incorporating shades of blue, earthy browns, or greens into outfits to really embrace the season – nature provides the perfect inspiration!

My Favorite Trick: Monochromatic Magic

One of my favorite tricks is to go with different shades of the same color for a sophisticated and timeless look. Imagine your family wearing various shades of blue, from deep navy to icy blue. It creates a sense of harmony and looks effortlessly stylish. This works especially well for fall family photos, where the backdrop of changing leaves adds even more depth to your color scheme.

Layer Up for Warmth and Style

Layering is key for both warmth and style during fall and winter photoshoots. Think cozy sweaters, stylish jackets, and warm scarves. Layering not only adds visual interest to your photos but also allows you to adjust to changing temperatures, which can be unpredictable here in North Carolina. Plus, it gives you more options for mixing and matching different textures and patterns.

A Tip for Camera-Shy Clients: For those who feel a bit nervous in front of the camera, wearing pants with pockets or having a scarf is so nice because it gives your hands somewhere to go and something to hold. It really comes in handy!

Coordinate, Don't Match

Instead of dressing everyone in the same outfit, aim for coordination. Choose colors and patterns that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. For example, if you're going for a rustic fall vibe for your family pictures, one family member can wear a burgundy dress and another can wear a brown corduroy jacket.

When in Doubt, Go Neutral: When in doubt, light beige or white is always my go-to color for one of the family members. Then we can build on top of it by using other colors in the theme you've chosen.

Don't Forget the Blanket!

I always recommend bringing a blanket of some sort to your photoshoot. Not only can it be used to bundle up and keep warm, but it can also serve as a prop for activities and games with the little ones. Plus, it adds a cozy and inviting touch to your photos.

Comfort is King (and Queen!)

Remember, comfort is key! Photoshoot day is not the time to try out a new pair of shoes or wear those heels that always give you blisters. Choose fabrics that are soft, warm, and allow for movement. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, especially for those active little ones. And don't forget to consider the weather! If it's chilly, opt for hats, gloves, and warm socks to keep everyone cozy.

Skip the Trends and Loud Patterns:

While it can be tempting to try out the latest trends, photoshoot outfits are best when they're timeless. Avoid large, bold patterns that can distract from your faces and the emotions in the photos. Trendy pieces might look dated in a few years, so stick with classic styles that will stand the test of time.

Don't Overthink It

Most importantly, relax and have fun! Choose outfits that reflect your family's personality and style. The goal is to capture genuine moments and create lasting memories, not to achieve perfection.
