Taming the Toddler Tantrums: A Mom Photographer's Guide to Stress-Free Photoshoots

As a mom of two little ones…

I know firsthand the chaos and joy that comes with raising children. And I also know the struggle of trying to capture those picture-perfect moments! Bribery, meltdowns, and the dreaded "cheese face" – I've been there!

Even though I'm a photographer with all the equipment and know-how, I don't have as many photos of my kids as you might think. Why? Just the thought of dressing my very vocal toddler son and getting him to cooperate for a photo used to exhaust me completely. It's a common challenge for parents β€” how to get toddlers to cooperate during photoshoots!

But I've learned a few tricks along the way to make family photoshoots more enjoyable for everyone, and I'm excited to share them with you!

The key to a successful family photoshoot? Keep it relaxed and fun. As moms, we often put so much pressure on ourselves to create those picture-perfect moments, but the reality is that kids are unpredictable! Instead of stressing over posed shots, focus on capturing genuine moments of connection and laughter. That's what I aim for in my Charlotte, NC photography sessions.

Location, Location, Location

When choosing a location for your photoshoot, I always opt for places that are short walks from the parking lot and free from major distractions like playgrounds. This helps minimize travel time and keeps little ones focused. Finding the right photoshoot location can make all the difference!

Games, Not Poses

I believe in creating a playful atmosphere where kids can be themselves. Forget the forced smiles and stiff poses! Instead of telling my son to hold his sister's hand and look at the camera, I'd tell him we were going to make snow angels or build a giant pile of leaves to jump in. And guess what? It worked like a charm! This approach is perfect for capturing natural family photos.

The Power of Low Expectations

This is the most important tip I can offer: keep your expectations low. Seriously! Don't make a big deal about the photoshoot beforehand. In fact, sometimes it's better to let it be a surprise. The more you hype it up, the more likely your child will resist. Managing expectations is key to a stress-free family photoshoot.

Here are some additional tips for a stress-free photoshoot:

  • Choose the right time of day: Aim for a time when your child is well-rested and happy.

  • Pack snacks and drinks: Keep those energy levels up!

  • Bring a favorite toy or blanket: A familiar object can provide comfort.

  • Be patient and flexible. Don't get discouraged if things don't go exactly as planned.

  • Embrace bribery (within reason, of course!) Sometimes a little incentive goes a long way. πŸ˜‰

  • Remember, I'm shooting on high speed! Even when you think you didn't get any pictures, you probably did. I've captured those fleeting smiles and genuine moments before you even knew it happened.

Make it a fun outing! Tell the kids you're going to the park and getting ice cream afterward. The less pressure and expectation you have, the better the experience will be for everyone.

Remember, the goal is to create beautiful memories, not perfect pictures. By focusing on fun and relaxation, you can capture the essence of your family and create lasting keepsakes.
